A minimum level, assessed by a test or diploma is required to be admitted to higher education institutions in France.

LEVEL RECOMMENDED :  TCF DAP with a minimum score of 400 pts or DELF B2/DALF C1

You shall always check the level required by the university you chose through its website.

What if the programme is taught in English? 

If the programme is 100% in english and if the university doesn't require it, it is not compulsory to have a certificate in French.
